A wedding can feel like a slice of heaven for two people in love because it’s the ultimate commitment to each other. Sometimes it takes a walk through hell to make that magical day come together.
Married women can relate to the emotional coaster that comes with wedding planning. Choosing the right dress, picking the perfect venue and other such details can feel like a life or death struggle for the marriage itself. That’s one reason why wedding-themed reality TV strikes a chord with audiences.
People can relate to the struggles that play out. Cable subscribers can catch their favorite wedding-themed shows on networks like TLC and WE tv through Cable.tv and follow the emotional journeys of many frustrated brides and grooms.
‘Bridezillas’
Tantrums and nervous breakdowns get redefined on each episode of “Bridezillas.” The WE tv series debuted season 10 in May, and it continues to draw viewers who want to witness out-of-control behavior from soon-to-be brides.
A typical episode presents the stories of two prospective brides, splitting time between each woman. Viewers learn how the bride and groom met and fell in love. The bride describes her wedding plans and the rest of the story focuses on events leading to the wedding. Each episode focuses on the conflicts these brides have with family members, wedding planners and other members of the wedding party.
Each bridal story is told over two episodes, according to WE tv so viewers will tune in to see one bride’s story conclude while the next one starts.
‘My Fair Wedding’
Now in its fifth season, “My Fair Wedding” follows host David Tutera while he does wedding makeovers. Tutera’s goal is to take outrageous ideas and make them work. He does an interview with each bride and learns their tastes before taking over as her wedding planner. WE tv notes that past weddings have included everything from a Bollywood theme to Las Vegas decor.
One twist to the new season is that viewers get to go behind the scenes as Tutera and his staff face off with out-of-control brides, grooms and mother-in-laws. It fully exposes the drama and tension leading up to the big day.
‘My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding’
Sixteen episodes of the TLC series “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding” have aired since it debuted in April 2012. It focuses on weddings for Roma families living in the U.S. The show spotlights hidden Roma culture. It offers fascinating insights into a poorly understood ethnic group. Viewers see Roma traditions firsthand and learn what “gypsies” are like in real life. They see how their nomadic lifestyle fits into the 21st century and how specific customs such as strict hygiene laws influence their lives.
Besides airing two seasons each with eight episodes, TLC also aired two follow-up specials on the Stanley family, the focal family in season one. The first special followed the Stanley sisters while the second special focused on what happened after the Stanley wedding in season one, according to TLC.
‘Four Weddings’
Every bride wants to believe she’s having the best wedding, but what happens if four brides agree to be guests at each other’s weddings to decide which is best.
The winning bride earns a luxury honeymoon for her and her husband. TLC notes that a bride in each episode can receive 120 possible points. Typically, the winners are the ones who offer the most elegant and extravagant wedding.
