Guest Post: Wedding Photography 101 – Avoid These 5 Mistakes

SINCE 1980 (2)

The wedding day is one of the most important days in anyone’s life. Besides all the things that will make it memorable, the best memories you will have are the ones you can always go back to – wedding photos. And you will want those memories to reflect the most precious moments in a way that will not diminish their significance. To achieve that, you must avoid some of the most common wedding photography mistakes.

Finalizing the Wedding Day Schedule without the Photographer

Make sure you talk to your photographer before finalizing the schedule for your special day. There are a lot of things he will need to know in order to take the proper equipment and plan everything. For instance, the amount of daylight present plays a major role in terms of photographing. Certain hours of the day are the best to get the most flattering light (the so called golden hour). Midday sun can be rather unflattering because it creates strong shadows.

Choosing just One Photographer

It is understandable that you want to save some money by opting for a single shooter, but that way you will reduce the quality of the wedding photos. Instead, try to cut down costs on something else. A photographer is not simply taking pictures, he is making them. That means that one scene, taken by two different photographers can come out as completely different. By having more angles of telling your story you will end up with much better results, and your love pictures will be more memorable.

Not Meeting the Photographer

Photographer is the person that should tell your story in the most amazing way. How can he do that if he does not know that story? If he gets the chance to meet you and your partner, he will learn your interests, find out your desires and plan how he can capture that mutual love. Besides, you will be able to explain the dos and don’ts of your wedding. Another plus is that you will feel more natural than when a stranger would point his camera at you.

Not sharing the Details and Not Asking for Advice

If you want some unique details in your wedding album (special photos with your maid of honor, family heritage, mother’s wedding dress, etc.), make sure you share that desires with your photographer and ask him for advice on how to do that. If you mention something like that on the very wedding day, there is a chance that the results will be sloppy, and you will have no one other than yourself to blame.

Being too Posy

When the day finally arrives, your photographer will probably tell you how to pose for a shot, and there is no reason not to listen to him. Still, although a certain number of perfectly posed photographs are necessary for every wedding album, the best pictures are usually the sincere moments captured when no one is trying too hard. Those are the exchanges of the loving looks between the bride and the groom, the tear in the groom’s eye when he sees the bride in the wedding dress for the first time, the hug of a parent, etc.

Capturing the “happily ever after” is not an easy task. That is why, in cooperation with your photographer, you must try for the results to be perfect.
