Word of advice: a best man speech is not something you can just show up and do. It is not even something you can just whip together in a bar the night before the wedding and expect it to come out phenomenal or even good. It is something that requires preparation because you were given the noble role of honoring your friend on one of the most important days of his life. You may not be able to write something that will rank among the most celebrated unique best man speeches, but with the right preparation, you will be able to write something decent that will give justice to the role you were given.
For some, writing a speech, or a best man speech, for that matter, can be overwhelming. Two things could possibly happen, (1) you have too many things to say or (2) you can’t think of anything at all. Both scenarios can be paralyzing and you could end up with a cringe-worthy speech you wish you don’t have to deliver. But how do you write a good best man speech? These three tips may help you.
1. It Is Not About You
Keep in mind that while you have the great role of delivering a speech, it shouldn’t be about you. The only time you could be the main subject is when you start off by introducing yourself. Keep it at that and keep the introduction short. Remember that this is the moment for the couple and they should be the highlight of your story. There is basically two things want to hear from you: the story of how you know the couple and that you wish them well. Save the long boring stories that will just drag on the occasion. Instead, focus on giving compliments to the couple and what made them special.
2. Be a Comedian They Would Love
If you go for the laughs, go for it! This is how many speeches become memorable and fun. But keep it at the right tone or you’ll risk ruining the occasion. Many people try hard at being funny that they put the couple in hot water, and ending up embarrassing themselves and everyone in the room. An occasional chuckle here and there is good enough. Be mindful of your punchlines and remember that grandma and the kids are in the audience. You don’t want to be the most hated person at the occasion, do you?
3. Stay Away From Taboo Topics
Avoid the disaster of letting too much slip off your tongue. Stay away from mentions of sex escapades, vulgar sex jokes, stupid drunken nights, teenage mischiefs or even mention of dirty little secrets. You could end up embarrassing your friend and yes, ruin the event. Do not even mention ex-partners because it could spoil the ambiance and stir in awkwardness. This is not the occasion to open Pandora’s Box just to get people to listen to you. Keep your speech decent and endearing and the groom will thank you for it.
These tips will be sure to help you draft that perfect best man speech, but another word from the wise: avoid too much wine before delivering it.
