How to Pick the Perfect Bridesmaid Dress

When you are about to get married, there is a lot to plan. Invitations, menu, guest lists, not to mention your dress and the rings. One of the many things that you want to get right, though, is the dresses for your bridesmaid. After all, the last thing you want is for your bridesmaid or bridesmaids to feel less than beautiful than the dresses that you choose for them.

However, it can be difficult to get everything right when you are handling so much. So, to help you out, in this article we are going to look at some tips that will lead you to the perfect bridesmaid dress so everything is exactly how you dreamed it for your special day.

Coordinate with Your Dress

One thing that you should consider when you are choosing a dress for your bridesmaid is that you want them to compliment you. This may sound a little selfish at first but you are the star of the show. So, you don’t want your dress to clash with your bridesmaids.

For example, if you choose your dress and it is covered in lace and beading, you will want to create contrast by giving your bridesmaids dresses that are simpler. Remember, you want everything in your wedding to mesh together as seamlessly as possible.

Think of Your Bridesmaids Appearances

When you are choosing a bridesmaid dress, you have to consider not only if the dress is pretty on its own but if it will look good on your bridesmaids. For example, a red dress might look beautiful on the rack but if one of your bridesmaids is a redhead, the dress will only serve to wash her out.

You will also want to consider body type when you are considering the cut of the dress. A strapless dress, for instance, won’t be very flattering on a bridesmaid with broad shoulders. Instead, you might want to give her a higher neckline that flatters her figure.

Consider the Season

As we have stated, you want your bridesmaids to be comfortable. This means more than just making sure the dress isn’t scratchy or too tight, it also means considering the weather. Of course, you can’t possibly know the exact weather of your wedding day months out.

What you can do, though, is consider the season. For example, if you are planning an outdoor wedding in August, you might want to avoid dresses with long sleeves or heavy fabric. Alternatively, if you are having a winter wedding, short dresses with thin straps might be a little cold.

Order in Advance

Another thing you want to keep in mind is the timeline of preparing for your wedding. You will want to order the bridesmaids dresses at least 6 weeks in advance if possible. You want to keep in mind that not all of the dresses will fit as soon as they arrive – this is why you need the time cushion between the dresses’ arrival and the wedding. It will give your bridesmaids time to get their dresses tailored so that everyone is beautiful and ready to go on your wedding day.

Remember Costs

When you are choosing bridesmaid dresses, remember that you are choosing something that your bridesmaids will (usually) have to buy themselves in order to get ready for your wedding. So, you might not want to choose a dress that is extremely expensive so that everyone can comfortably afford the dresses you want them to have.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask your bridesmaids for their opinions on the dresses. You want everything to be perfect and part of that is making sure that your bridesmaids are comfortable on your wedding day too. Plus, you can’t be expected to plan a whole wedding single-handedly – don’t be afraid to ask for a little help now and again!

However, the final decision will be up to you. Your bridesmaids can give you ideas but it is ultimately your wedding. There is a distinctive difference between taking advice and being a pushover. The great thing about bridesmaids, though, is that they are there to celebrate your wedding with you – they want the best for you so you can enjoy your special day.
