From the groom, Kevin: The engagement event was a difficult one to plan. I took a look at a lot of successful and unsuccessful ones. I wanted a private event. Something simple, and something she can keep with her, with us, for years to come. I wanted something fun, whimsical, and also heartfelt.
After I finished preparations in the Summer, I picked her up at JFK airport, received her father’s blessing over the phone and had a heart to heart with her mother on a NYC stoop.
Come July 2011 we finally had the perfect together moment. I rushed her back home from NYC to Boston, and then we laid in my stuffy attic in my bedroom. I had her read the book out loud; All the way up to the actual proposal. As I was also busy playing with my dog during this very emotional and life changing time – I had her open the ring box herself (and I think I had her put her ring on her own finger, too). I didn’t really plan that out well. In the end – I didn’t actually propose to her as much as she proposed to herself.
She still said yes.
