With summer being the core season for outdoor weddings, there are also 3 other seasons of the year that couples prefer to have their big day on. Yes, you can call me Captain Obvious but with all of that said, are you truly prepare to handle an outdoor wedding? Whether it is your wedding or another lucky couples wedding that you are attending, being outdoors on the hectic day can be grueling. Being a wedding photographer in Southern California, majority of the weddings I shoot end up being outdoors and I absolutely love it! Through all of my experiences here, I have picked up and learned a few tips to help keep me on my feet throughout these beautiful outdoor weddings.
Tip One: How To Not Faint In The Heat Of The Summer
We all know know the basics; drinks lots of water, don’t wear black, and keep to the shade. But I have some other tips that you might not be initially thinking about..
Timing is key, have your ceremony right before sunset. Not only is it the coolest part of the day, but it also provides a beautiful unforgettable atmosphere for you, the guest, and your wedding photos.
Then comes the bugs, there has been countless times where I’ve gotten over dozens and dozens of mosquito bites on my body from shooting weddings here in the Rancho Cucamonga area of So Cal. Think about getting some Tiki torches or maybe some citronella candles that will keep those pesky blood suckers away.
Above all else, be sure to provide the little things.. Like ice cold waters, cool little fans that can also double as party favors, and an area where guest can keep cool out of the sun.
Tip Two: Keeping All Your Fingers and Toes While In The Cold
One of the main things people love about a winter wedding is how cozy you can make the atmosphere. Having lots candles and even some bonfires can trick the brain into ignoring how cold it truly is.
Warm beverages is another way to to not only get that cozy vibe across, but also provide your guest with some warm cores. I don’t care how manly you are, everyone loves a warm cup of coco. You also have options like hot tea, hot coffee, and maybe some warm spiked beverages.
Blankets, gloves, and warm head pieces. If you have the budget maybe think about some take home gloves or beanies for your guest that have your wedding date and name on them. And always provide some warm blankets for the guest, just another way you can add to your wedding theme.
Tip Three: Mother Nature And The Unknown
We all know how unpredictable she can be! So when having an outdoor wedding, always prepare for the curve-balls that weather can throw your way. Sometimes there is only so much that you can do, at the end of it all you just have to embrace it and enjoy the path that your special day takes.
